Reading Mt Yotei Before You Choose a Line

Yotei looks simple from a distance: one clean volcanic cone. On a planning map, that symmetry is exactly what demands care.

Start with the mountain, not the track

Mt Yotei is an isolated volcanic cone with slopes facing every compass direction. That makes the mountain visually legible, but it does not make it uniform. Wind, sun, snowfall and temperature can create very different snow on adjacent aspects. A route line can show where somebody travelled; it cannot tell you whether the same ground is appropriate today.

SnowWind currently displays five recorded Yotei tracks derived from the site’s attributed route data. Treat them as evidence about possible access patterns and as a way to inspect the surrounding landform. Do not treat the number of tracks, their names, or their clean appearance on a screen as a ranking. The underlying source, date and licence matter, and current land access or winter approach conditions may differ.

Begin zoomed out. Find the road network, the broad base of the cone, the aspect of the intended ascent and the direction in which a descent would naturally continue. Then hide the route mentally and ask whether you could still explain the terrain. If the answer is no, you are following a line rather than reading a mountain.

Read shape at three scales

At mountain scale, notice that every choice around a cone commits you to an aspect and to a drainage system. At slope scale, look for ribs, bowls, gullies and abrupt rolls. At micro-terrain scale, remember that a digital elevation model cannot show every creek opening, cornice, tree well or wind feature you will encounter. Each scale answers a different question, and none replaces what you observe on the day.

Ridges can provide orientation, while gullies can collect both moving snow and a descending party. Convex rolls may hide the slope below your feet. A broad face that looks uncomplicated in plan view may funnel into confined terrain lower down. Use the 3D view to rotate the mountain and identify these relationships, then return to the flat map so perspective does not exaggerate or soften the apparent angle.

The site’s terrain is processed from Geospatial Information Authority of Japan elevation data. Resolution and survey method vary by coverage, and the runtime mesh is simplified. SnowWind also uses vertical exaggeration for visual clarity in some 3D views. That makes landform easier to see, but measured slope values—not the apparent steepness of the rendered scene—must anchor any comparison.

Separate route facts from daily conditions

Static map facts include aspect, relative elevation, drainage shape and the relationship between a route trace and surrounding terrain. Daily questions include new snow, wind transport, temperature change, visibility, surface condition and the status of access points. Mixing those categories is a common planning error: an accurate map does not make yesterday’s weather current.

Open the relevant avalanche information before selecting terrain, not after. Read the original bulletin and its publication time. SnowWind links to bulletin providers but does not republish a bulletin or calculate its own danger value. If coverage is absent, stale or geographically imperfect, that uncertainty belongs in the plan. It is not permission to fill the gap with a coloured map layer.

Build at least one lower-exposure alternative and one clear turnaround condition. Those alternatives should use terrain you have actually inspected, rather than simply shortening the same commitment. A strong plan can be abandoned early without negotiation. A weak plan depends on reaching the mountain and hoping the first choice works.

Navigation on a symmetrical cone

Symmetry creates a special navigation problem. Near the upper mountain, a small bearing error can place a descending party on a different aspect from the ascent. Flat light removes shape; wind can erase the track; cloud can erase the horizon. Confirm the descent direction before moving, maintain position awareness while climbing, and carry an offline navigation method you know how to use.

A phone is valuable but not a complete system. Cold affects batteries, touchscreens become awkward in gloves, and devices can be dropped or damaged. Carry independent power and a backup appropriate to your skills. Share the plan with someone outside the party, including the broad objective, expected return and what they should do if you are overdue.

The map cannot establish private-property permission, road ploughing, parking availability or the condition of a summer trailhead in winter. Verify access through current official or local information. Avoid blocking snow-removal work and do not assume another vehicle proves that parking is permitted.

A disciplined map-to-field handoff

Before leaving the map, summarise the plan in plain language: the aspect you expect to use, the major terrain traps, the points where you can change course, the information you still need, and the reason the alternative is meaningfully more conservative. Everyone in the group should be able to repeat that summary. If only one person understands the screen, the group does not yet have a shared plan.

At the trailhead, start over with observed evidence. Compare wind effect, snowfall, visibility, temperature and access with the assumptions made at home. Continue to compare terrain around you with the map, but let reality overrule the model. A track is a planning reference, not a promise of safe passage.

SnowWind’s Yotei page is best used as a terrain briefing table: rotate the cone, compare aspects, inspect recorded source lines and identify questions. The final decision belongs to the party and must be based on current official information, training, field observations and conservative judgement. If those pieces do not agree, the map is telling you to ask more—not to go farther.
